Today we use a variety of three-mic configurations featuring some great microphones form Cascade.
All mics ran through Golden Age Project mic preamps, straight to our DAW.
We used some plug-in eq and no compression.
Configuration #2: Elroy Tube, set to figure-8 -10db pad 8″ in front of kick. XY pair of M39 SDCs 46″ above snare. No pad or roll-off.
Configuration #3: Elroy Tube, set to figure-8 -10db pad 8″ in front of kick. Fathead Blumlein pair 43″ above snare.
Configuration #4: Elroy Tube, set to figure-8 -10db pad 8″ in front of kick. Pair of Fathead Ribbons in a Glynn Johns configuration 53″ from snare.
Configuration #5: Fathead II 8″ in front of kick. Fathead ribbons in Recorderman configuration.
The Elroy had a notch filter at 262 hz and -3 db @ 779 hz.
The X-15 had -2 db @ 1.1 kHz.
Bonus Configuration: Elroy Tube, set to Cardioid -10db pad 8″ in front of kick. X-15 Stereo Ribbon 43″ above snare. Pair of Fatheads in Blumlein pair about 12′ in front of kit.
The kit is a Pearl with a 9″x12″ rack tom, 16″x16″ floor tom and a 18″x24″ kick drum. Each of the drums feature Evans Drumheads. On the toms are coated G2’s, on the batter side of the kick is a GMAD with a coated G2 on the non-batter side. The snare was a Yamaha Anton Fig signature snare with an Evans Reverse Power dot head.
The cymbals are all Paiste’s including a 15″ hi-hat combination of 2002 Sound Edge bottom hats with a 15″ Giant Beat top. The crashes were a 20″ 602 thin crash and a 19″ Dark Energy MKI. The ride was a 22″ Dark Energy MKI.
